Biography

Fiona began her flute studies at the age of 9 in her home town of Southampton. At the age of 15 she joined the Southampton Youth Orchestra, where she discovered her love for orchestral music. This passion for music took her to Bristol University, where she studied for a BA (Hons) in Music. After graduating in 2012, she moved to Cardiff to study for a Performance MA on the flute at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. There her teachers were Matthew Featherstone, Jonathan Burgess, Sarah Newbold and Liz May. In addition she had piccolo lessons with Andrew Lane. During her time at both RWCMD and Bristol University, Fiona had many opportunities to perform with orchestras. These include the RWCMD Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Conductors’ Orchestra, Opera Gala Orchestra, Bristol University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Operatic Society Orchestra. At RWCMD, she was also a member of Chamber Winds, a chamber ensemble that reached the finals of Band Cymru, S4C’s televised competition.

After graduating from her Masters, Fiona returned to Bristol to teach. She currently teaches woodwind for South Gloucestershire Music Hub, in addition to teaching flute, piano, oboe, clarinet and saxophone privately. She has also previously taught flute at Sidcot School. She continues to practise the flute and performs regularly in Southampton with the chamber group 'Bella Armonia'.

Fiona believes that music is a gift from God and that we can use it to glorify him. She loves to use her musical skills at her church, where she is regularly found playing either the flute or the piano (and occasionally both) in the band. She believes that God can use music to bring healing and blessing. She hopes and prays that this is what her music making does!
